There’s not a lot happening in our kitchen the month, but there have been some big things.
I’ve been taking some time out to enjoy the finer things in life; reading a book, writing letters, watching in amazement as E learns about getting around (he’s not crawling yet, but he’s damn close), and supervising the beginning of our build.
So without further ado…
In my kitchen…
… a 2kg tub of coconut oil is slowly being eaten away. I love it, and last time I bought 900gm, it went too quickly. I’ve found a guy in Daylesford who will post this tub for $42. I think that’s a pretty good deal. We’re now using it in everything; for our stir fry’s, my porridge and energy balls.
In my kitchen…
We had a big bunch of kale from a friends garden, and it was just sitting in the fridge going limp…
So now we have a bottle of kale powder. I ripped up the leaves, put them in the dehydrator for about 6 hours, and then blitzed the dried leaves in J’s coffee grinder. Now we have SUPER POWER POWDER! I’m planning on adding it to smoothies, salads, risottos etc. I can’t wait!
… there are some beautiful new props. I picked them up on our trip to Daylesford, some from op shops and some from the most lovely vintage/second hand shop.
I’m excited to find my kitchen mojo, and use them in some beautiful photos with my new range of backgrounds.
This is not in our current kitchen, but our future one.
In our kitchen…
… is some pipes!!!! If you squint, the furthest pipes away are the kitchen ones. The ones in the middle are the bathroom and laundry. How exciting is this!!! There’ll be a post soon about the progress.
What’s in your kitchen this month? Have you had a look at some of the other kitchens over at Fig Jam and Lime Cordial?
Superfoods everywhere in your kitchen. The idea to dehydrate and blitz the kale is brilliant, maybe I’ll have to buy the dehydrated I saw in the Aldi catalogue after all…
A dehydrator is such an invaluable kitchen appliance.
Clare that is sheer brilliance making your own super food powder. Do you think I could do this using the oven on a really low temp for ages? I have so many greens in the garden and this would be sooooo much cheaper than the one I buy. Love the new props but the most exciting is your new kitchen!
I think you could definitely do it in the kitchen. You just want to dry it out, not cook it like chips. And you’d just have to make sure there was absolutely no moisture left in the leaves before you blend it.
It must be so exciting to watch your house come together step by step. I think you got a bargain with that big tub of coconut oil. Great that your dehydrator came to use with the kale xx
It is so exciting!
Seriously?! I read this whole post with my mouth hanging slightly open! The oil, the powder (I just make pesto out of any rogue greens but that is brilliant), and oh those props… Congrats on how the build is coming along!
Thanks JJ. There’s a lot going on!
I love hearing about the house progress. I know it’s often tough but you will be SO pleased when it’s all done. What a brilliant idea to dehydrate and blitz kale!
Thanks Maureen. There’s a lot going on in our lives at the moment, so the kale powder is keeping me going!
Isn’t Daylesford the best for finding hidden treasures? I love the big antique shed there. We spend far too long there every time.
I’m impressed with your Kale powder! Good thinking! Must be exciting to finally see your house going up! That future kitchen won’t be too far away I hope x
Daylesford is amazing! Most of those treasures are from that big shed.
Great idea with the kale, it comes out such a fabulous green too! Congrats on the house as well – it seems to take forever at this stage but will really accelerate towards the end. I had to chuckle about your props purchases though, I have four out of the six in my kitchen too, just because I hate to throw things away I think – I’m interested to see how you use them…
Beck, thanks so much for your comment! I haven’t used many of the props yet, cooking/blogging isn’t at the top of my to do list. But I hope to soon.
I’m so excited about your house build, I can’t wait to see how it all goes! Glad to hear you’re finding time for peaceful activities, and that kale powder will be great for green smoothies! 🙂
Thanks Celia, I’m loving watching our house being built, and being so involved.
How exciting your house is coming along. That coconut oil looks pretty impressive and its australian grown – nice. I am super amazed that you have made your own kale powder, maybe I should give it a go I have heaps at the moment. The plants all need thinning. enjoy the building
The coconut oil was such great find. You should definitely have a go at making kale powder.
I’m loving the idea of the kale powder – does it add flavour to the smoothies or just colour? Congratulations on the start of your new house being built. It will be built before you know it – looking forward to your new kitchen, as I’m sure you are too 😉 See you next month
I’ve found that it just adds colour to the smoothies, I didn’t taste kale in the smoothie.
G’day Renos are always very exciting step by step and can’t wait to see your future kitchen too!
Thanks for this month’s kitchen view also!
Cheers! Joanne @What’s On The List
Thanks Joanne, it is very exciting.
I love op shop finds too What a great idea with the kale powder. And how very exciting about your new house.
Thanks Sherry!
