Welcome, it’s lovely to meet you! this slice is my absolute favourite recipe. I hope you love it too. Bake it, then settle in with a cup of tea. Maybe you’d like these too, and these are super quick and delicious.
This was published in the Herald Sun on Friday 24th of May
Mary Bond is my grandma, my mum’s mum. The slice mentioned is light and fluffy, crispy and browned on top, with tender bites of apples nestled throughout the slice, a recipe that I have also baked hundreds and hundreds of times.
The Herald Sun has contacted Grandma and they are going to re-publish the recipe, but I thought I’d share it with you guys first.
Update: here is the re-published recipe. Printed in The Herald Sun Thursday 30th of May.
- 3 apples - peel, cored and cut into 1cm chunks
- 2 cups self-raising flour
- 1 cup sugar
- 125 gm butter - melted
- 1 egg
- Add apples, sugar and flour to large mixing bowl, combine.
- Add butter and egg, stir until well combined.
- Press into lined slice tray.
- sprinkle with cinnamon and sugar.
- Bake 180 degrees for 35 - 40 mins.
Thanks grandma, that sounds delish! And such a lovely thank you note in the paper
Wasn’t it such a lovely thank you note!
This recipe has been on my fridge since it was in the paper. I love that I can whip this up and be eating it warm with ice cream within 45 mins – it is my absolute favourite !
how much is 125 gm butter?
Hi Ceci, I’m not sure that I understand. You have to weight out 250 grams of butter for this recipe.
Hi it says 125gms in the recipe, 250gms would be a lot of butter in ratio to the other ingredients?
It says 125g in the ingredients??
But the recipe says 125 grams melted ?
The recipe says 125gm ….is that incorrect?
The recipe says 125gm ….should it be 250g ? Thanks
Your recipe calls for 125gr butter, but in your message to Cece says you need to weigh out 250 grams. Can you clarify or update your recipe?
Then why does it say 125 gms in the recipe above?
Hi
Your recipe state 125g butter melted.
You say, 250g is needed.
This may explain why my attempts at making this have not been very successful.
A cup is 250, so, 1/2 cup
4oz
Just goes to show such a simple recipe will stand the test of time and be a family favourite through the generations. What a lovely thank you letter too.
The thank you letter bought tears to my eyes. The recipe is my favourite slice!
How amazing! What a thrill to see it in the paper.
It was so nice to see it in the paper!
How lovely that this has been published, someone took the time to write in and thank your grandmother, and that it will be published again. That’s a lovely story xx
I really loved that someone took the time to write in and say thank you!
I made this today Clare! It is so simple and so yummy! Thank you for sharing.
Jodi, it’s so lovely to hear that! I hope your family loved it!
What a wonderful honour for your Gran! Thanks for publishing, this looks great
It was so nice to see the letter. And the slice is delicious.
Mmm it’s just the weather for these sorts of treats isn’t it? That’s very exciting that it’s going to be in the paper again!
It’s the perfect weather for these treats. Sitting down with a slice of this slice and a cup of tea makes my day.
What a fab story. Love it! I will make the slice tomorrow. I have heaps of apples and I reckon the kids will love it.
Please do let me know if you make it Liz. I’d love to know what you think.
That’s fantastic Clare, what a superstar your grandma is!! I’ll be trying this recipe soon for sure!
She’s such a super star! Sophie, let me know if you make it!
Sounds delicious, grandmas have al the best recipes, full of heart
Grandma’s absolutely have the best recipes!

It is so cool! I just love that the woman wrote in to say thank you!
Yummy, love a good old fashioned apple slice!
Lizzy it’s a wonderful easy apple slice.
What a lovely story and what a great recipe! I’m going to make it…right now 🙂
Aga, I’d love to know how you like it!
I have been cooking this slice since my mum gave me the recipe, that she cut from the Sun 25 years ago…
Good recipes never go out of fashion
Vana, this comment is so lovely! I wonder if the recipe you have was my grandmas?
Hi Clare,
Just rang my sister in Italy, she has mums recipe book ( the original) and she says.
” yes it’s cut out of the Sun” so there you go, I’ve been baking the ” original” .
My mum was a huge collector of recipes and scrap booked into exercise books all the true, tried and tested recipes.
I’m glad I could share with you..
That’s so amazing, Clare’s grandmother is my mum. Wait til i tell her how far this one little recipe has travelled. On a day when i am reading about the tragic murder of a young woman, simple stories and connections bring happiness. Thanks
Thanks for stopping by Mum! I’d love for grandma to hear this story!
Vana, it is so lovely to hear! Thank you so much for letting me know.
clare,i love how this looks and is so simple to make, just one question it looks like it has sugar and spice sprinkled over the top,is this done before or after it is cooked.
Oh, thank you so much for asking. You sprinkle the sugar and cinnamon over the slice before it’s cooked.
Can you let me know what size slice tray is best for this slice? is it meant to be tall or thin ( like a caramel slice) i really want to make this weekend but not overcook it. Thanks x
Sorry it’s taking me so long to get back to you Jo. It’s a long flat tin, about 30×24 cm.
what a lovely momento of your nana’s recipe. So nice to know that it has meant so much to others.
Her Apple slice is soooo good!
Lovely post – so nice to know that these recipes in newspapers resonate so widely – wonder if the same will be said of so many of these quirky modern recipes in newspapers! I am bookmarking this recipe as it looks much simpler than my mum’s apple slice which involves a layer of apples in the middle
It really is a wonderful slice! And so easy!
Dear Clare,
I am living in the middle of The Netherlands near the river Rhine – in a nice little senior-house with a little sunny garden. When I started to live there I bought myself a small young APPEL tree and in the healthy riverclay the tree grew and grew … after two years the first blossems came, right to the trunk, so did the appels a while after the blossems where gone !!!! This year I discovered 7 appel together on a row thight together – the appels are as big as you can hold in one hand and the colour is wine-red – I will make a photo of it !! And ……. these appels I will use in your Grandma’s receipt !!!!!
I would love so much to see photos of your beautiful apples and if you make my grandma’s slice, I’d love to see photos of that too.
I remember reading this in your tweet or fb page and meant to make this. Thanks for sharing.. adds to bookmark.
Hope you enjoyed it!
This recipe looks so good, I’m just about to make a batch and was wondering how well it freezes and defrosts?
I’m not sure about freezing, it doesn’t usually last that long in our house.
Looks absolutely scrumptious ! I must try my hand at it. Thank you for sharing it. Have shown it to my wife as we both love quick & simple good tasting food. (Peter – South Africa)
The slice is so delicious! I’d love to know if you give it a go.
I have just made this slice and it is lovely. So simple to make and tastes great, what a wonderful family recipe. Thank you for sharing.
So glad you liked it Donna!
Tried this tonight, it was lovely!
So glad Amy!
Made this slice today, lasted 20 minutes! Thank you so much – so easy and so delicious. Will definitely be making it again.
So glad you like it Toni!
Great recipe and a great story to go along with it. I made it last night and we think it is delicious.
Thanks Elissa. It’s so delicious. I might just make it today.
This looks delicious! Definitely making this one; thanks Clare x
It’s sooooo yummy! And so easy.
can you say if it matters whether eating apples or cooking apples are used in the apple slices? Thank you.
I hope you received my email. 🙂 You can use any apple.
This was so good! And so simple. I made it with my 3 yr old and she had a great time. I was wondering if you have tried it with any other fruit? I’m thinking of playing around with the ingredients a little.
Thanks for sharing this. It’s going in my recipe journal
So glad you liked it Tracy, it really is my favourite. I have heard of others making it with grapes, and I’ve made it with pears.
I’ve just made this (it’s currently 1:16am, but my son wants it for school lunch tomorrow lol). I completely missed the part about the sugar and cinnamon on top, but it still tastes absolutely beautiful. While mixing it I kept thinking that it was never going to work because it looked so dry but the results were very pleasing.
So glad you liked it Kirsty! It’s such a family favourite here! Never mind about the cinnamon and sugar, give it a go next time.
This oven temperature of 180 degrees can’t be right???
180 Celcius Beverly. 🙂
Once I convert this recipe for US measures and oven temp……I am making this. Sounds so yummy and simple.
I can’t wait to hear how you go.
Thank you for this great recipe. I made it, but added 1 small teaspoon of cinnamon . We have just enjoyed a piece with a cup of tea. It is delicious.
So lovely to hear, thank you for telling me.
Made this today with my kids (3&7). We swapped one apple for a cup of frozen blueberries and it was delish. Thanks for the recipe 😊
Thanks Elle, I love hearing what people sub for the apple!
Just made this and already sampled the finished slice while it was still warm. Such an easy recipe and a delicious slice. Will definitely share this recipe around.
It’s so delicious isn’t it Gillian.
Made this slice on the weekend. All gone now!! Thank you for sharing.
So glad Maree!
I am so glad i found you today. And – I was looking for an apple recipe to try before I decided on a recipe to take to a large church function for dessert this sunday. I made ‘Grandma’s Apple Cake’ for just my husband and myself tonight (I’m an old grandma myself but still enjoy cooking) but I kind of halved the recipe and used dried apple rings which I first stewed in a saucepan. They worked just fine and the dessert was simply delicious. I will definitely make it for Sunday night but I will probably double the ingredients – and still use rehydrated apple rings, slightly chopped. I also added chopped walnuts on the top. It’s a wonderful recipe, so simple and adaptable to whatever is available. I thought I could use tinned apples too should I not have fresh apples on hand.
Thank you Clare.
I’m so glad you enjoyed my grandma’s recipe and discovered just how versatile it is.
Hi Clare, just made this slice tonight and had it with ice cream. Very nice slice with an easy and simple recipe. Thanks for sharing.
So glad you liked it Mirah. 🙂
Hi, I’m going to make this tomorrow , is it castor or granulated sugar ?
I use granulated but either is fine 🙂
I loved it – and so did my family!
Thank you so much for this recipe – i have shared it with my cooking friends….
Angel Nair
I’m so glad you liked it!
What is a slice tray?
It’s about 17cm by 23 cm tray.
Cannot wait to make the recipe. Only question I have s what size pan? I live in California I need some kind of measurement that I can translate to quarts or inches. Thanks so much Esther.
Sorry it has taken me so long to get back to you. The pan is about 17cm by 27cm.
Loved this recipe, so easy to make and really yummy!!!
So glad you liked it!
Hi Clare, I am so glad that I follow social media posts back to the source, if possible. I am glad to have read the story behind this slice, which I am excited to try. I will think of you and your Grandma every time I make it (and I imagine that will be often). Thanks for making my day, via gggiraffe.blogspot, via Pauline Robertson (healthyinspirationsforyou) on Facebook.
I only include the reposters of your recipe for your information and because they had the respect to provide sources in their posts, too.
Kerri
Thank you so much Kerri, for you kind words and letting me know which lovely people are sharing this recipe. I’m going to visit my Grandma this weekend, she’ll be so happy to hear about everyone baking her slice.
Thanks for the recipe
I’ve just made it with gluten free flour & added a handful of sultanas, it came out a treat. It will be great warmed up & served with some cream for dessert tonight.
thanks
Helen
I’m so happy to know that it can easily be made gluten free!
So I’ve had this recipe bookmarked for ages to try and I finally made it. And it’s truly delicious as everyone has said. This will definitely be made over and over again. Thank you grandmother from another happy baker
I’m so glad you liked it. It’s such a great one isn’t it!
what size pan ?
Approximately 30cm (l) x 20.5cm (w) x 3cm (h)
I am baking this right now! I’ll let you know how it goes 🙂
I’m now retired from teaching Home Economics, but I found that reprint of your Grandmothers Apple Slice recipe in the Herald Sun. I loved that it had first been printed 25 years earlier and decided that it would be a great slice for the Year 7s to make. The students loved it and it was made every term for the next few years by many children. In fact it is still being made at my old school by the new Home Ec teacher.
I am diabetic but still make this slice but use Wholemeal flour and xylitol as the sweetener. I’ve added chopped strawberries, other berries, pears, gold and green kiwi fruit, nashi’s and apples plus combinations of fruit. I cut it when cold but store it in a container in the freezer as xylitol does not have the keeping properties of sugar. A slices thaws out in time to have with a cuppa. Delicious.
baking this now – I added a sprinkling of Cinnamon, nutmeg and mixed spices, another egg and milk to get the right consistency. Hopefully it turns out ok.
I really hope you enjoyed it!
I cut it that recipe when it was first published in the Herald Sun, loved it then and still make it now.
It’s always delicious and l serve it with whipped cream. Beautiful. Thank you for sharing it here.
Hi there,
I have made this slice many times it is simple to make and delicious.
I am having 7 adults for Easter Sunday lunch will the amounts in this recipe be enough?
Hi there i love this I’ve made it once before and it went in minutes in our house, i want to make it for a little get together we are having but im also making a few other things so im hopping to make this in advance, do you think this will keep for 2 days?
In our house it’s called Aunty Margs amazing apple cake as my aunt would bring it to every family gathering and it was always the first dish to disappear. My absolute favourite apple recipe.
